How much budget do I need?

There is no magic number — there is a mechanism. Size the budget so the platform can finish learning.

Big enough that the platform can learn from it: enough results per week to finish its learning phase at your expected cost per result. Too-small budgets fail slowly and expensively.

There is no magic number — the right budget follows from a mechanism. Ad platforms optimize per ad set, and each needs a minimum flow of results within its learning window to figure out who responds. With too little data, delivery stays unstable and costs stay high — the platform never stops guessing.

The framework: daily budget ÷ expected cost per result × days in the learning window ≈ results the platform gets to learn from. If that lands well under the platform's stated threshold, either raise the budget, run fewer ad sets, or optimize for a cheaper event (a lead instead of a purchase) until there is more volume.

Why too small fails: a budget spread thin across many ad sets gives each one a trickle of data. Every ad set stays in learning forever, which usually costs more per result than one properly funded ad set — the least intuitive and most expensive novice mistake.

The platform numbers behind the framework
  • Meta optimizes per ad set and historically needed roughly 50 optimization events in 7 days to exit the learning phase — Meta now applies dynamic per-campaign thresholds, so treat it as "roughly", never exactly. Meta best practice · knowledge v2026-07-13.1, verified 2026-07-13.
  • Google Smart Bidding calibrates for up to ~3 weeks or 1–2 conversion cycles after a change. Google Ads Help (support.google.com/google-ads/answer/13020501), accessed 2026-07.
  • Official floors where they exist: LinkedIn requires $10/day per campaign (business.linkedin.com); TikTok requires $50/day at campaign level and $20/day per ad group (ads.tiktok.com, updated Aug 2025). Meta publishes no fixed dollar minimums — they vary by currency and optimization type.
Worked example

Say a lead costs you about $10 and Meta's bar is ~50 results a week. $50/day buys ~35 leads a week — under the bar, so delivery stays wobbly. $75–100/day clears it. If that's out of reach, don't shrink into it: optimize one step up the funnel (a cheaper event) or run fewer ad sets instead.
